The main trends in cloud computing

Citizen Developer is the first in cloud computing trends. His Citizen concept opens up the possibilities of connected systems for people who don't know how to code. Tools like If This Then That have introduced ways for everyday people to plug into popular APIs and create custom automation.

In 2021, expect Microsoft, AWS, Google, and many other companies to release tools that make it easier for developers to build complex drag-and-drop applications.

Microsoft's Power Platform is arguably the leader in this field with Power Apps, Power Flow, Power AI and Power Builder – the combination of four tools allows you to build complex mobile and web applications that can interact with business tools. AWS isn't stopping there either with the introduction of HoneyCode.

Google is also investing heavily in machine learning and they have all kinds of products based on machine learning. Google Lens recently launched, which lets you point your camera at objects to get more information.

Automation

The secret of Cloud is the possibility of automation. Done right, automation can increase the efficiency of your delivery team, improve the quality of systems and networks, and reduce the risk of slow systems or downtime. The problem is that automation is not an easy task. As investment in civil developer tools and artificial intelligence grows, more devices are expected to make automation more convenient for cloud service providers.

Continued investment in data

The cloud has already expanded to help organizations analyze, store and collate data. This trend will continue, but in the future, data will be stored in much larger databases in a distributed computing environment.

A big step forward will be the processing of large volumes of data by storing them on top of databases and graphics processors (GPUs). This trend is already well underway and will likely continue to grow in the coming years. This change has many ramifications, from how we compute, store and use data to the type of business systems we will develop in the future.

This will also increase the need for new computer architectures. As data continues to grow, it will be distributed across many different machines in the data center, and many of these machines will run under traditional and new computing models. A conventional CPU is an example of a system architecture that will become less relevant in the future because it cannot perform processing on many nodes.

GPUs, on the other hand, can be configured to perform this processing on clusters of machines, and while they don't have a general-purpose processor like a CPU, they can be programmed to perform many types of operations.

Ultimately, all of this will result in organizations needing to run massive numbers of algorithms in parallel on clusters of machines to perform real-time analytics. Thus, the cloud will allow organizations to flexibly and quickly acquire computing resources.
Let's take a look at the next trends in cloud computing.

Competition

The #1 trend in cloud computing for 2021 is increased competition between AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The competition will be held in three different directions:

  • Prices and financial incentives
  • Reliability
  • Other suppliers

The fastest way to overcome investment barriers is to reduce costs. The model that AWS is introducing (you pay for what you use) will expand through all services and replace subscription models. Expect all cloud companies to provide tools that clearly show resource usage and service cost per byte.

In addition to greater service transparency, expect cloud companies to offer high-commitment agreements. Cloud companies want your business and are willing to pay for it. If you are making any investment in the cloud, you should ask the service provider to clearly state what investment they are making in you as a customer.

Reliability is another key differentiator. In early 2021, Google Cloud Platform experienced a significant service interruption. The outage affected many companies and became a problem for GCP. However, the reality is that the reliability of cloud hosting has never been better. That being said, expect all vendors to continue doubling down on reliability.

In many ways, cloud technology is still in its infancy, and many other companies like Alibaba, IBM, and TCS want you to use their cloud services. The greater the competition, the better the choice for customers. There is a lot of money being invested in the cloud, and you should ask all your vendors what their cloud strategy is and where they can give you a financial incentive to use their cloud services.

In order for your enterprise to take full advantage of the cloud trends emerging in 2021, you need to ensure that your team or the team of the cloud migration provider has the skills to create and implement a successful cloud strategy.
